Design and build quality

Let me first tell you the recipe for making an iPhone 16. In the iPhone 16, remove the Mute switch, replace it with the Action button, and add a camera control button on the other side. Flip the back, realign the cameras, make it a vertical camera layout, and voila—the iPhone 16 is ready. 

Now, Let me tell you the equation for making a Samsung Galaxy S24. Simply add one more camera below the vertical pattern. You get glass on the front and back and a metal frame as well.  The metal used for the frame on both these phones is aluminum. On Samsung, you’ve got a glossy finish, whereas on iPhone, you’ve got a matte finish, which I prefer.

Also, I like that the iPhone has so many fantastic color options compared to the Galaxy S24. Both are compact phones with a very good in-hand feel. Finding out the differences between the two would be pedantic because they don’t make a difference in daily usage. And since these are flagships, you get an IP68 rating as well.

However, Samsung does have an advantage in that the TypeC port at the bottom is a USB Gen 3.2 TypeC port, whereas on the iPhone, as we all know, it’s USB 2.0. Both phones also have very tough glass; for example, on the iPhone, you get a ceramic shield, whereas on the  S24, you get Corning Gorilla Glass Wix2.

Now, despite Apple saying that the ceramic shield used on the iPhone 16 series this year is 50% better, it might be better in tensile strength but not in scratch resistance because the display scratches up very quickly, which is different for the S24.  Take a look, get it side by side, and you’ll know the difference. And we’ve been using the S24 for much longer.

Now, when we compare the displays on these phones, I’m convinced that Samsung has a better display than Apple. Firstly, you get a larger display with a better screener state than the iPhone 16, primarily because you’ve got slimmer bezels and just a punch-hole camera instead of a dynamic island.

Secondly, you get a proper 120-hertz LTPO panel instead of the iPhone 16’s 60-hertz panel.  Finally, when we tested the iPhone 16’s display against the Galaxy  S24, it was definitely brighter—brighter not just indoors when watching VR content but also outdoors.

The other thing is that on Android phones, the Galaxy S24 has an in-display fingerprint scanner. It’s an ultrasonic one, whereas on the iPhone 16, you’ve got Face ID. Although the haptic feedback was good, the iPhone 16’s tuning was better, which was tighter. It had better vibrations compared to the Galaxy S24.

Now, this is one aspect of the multimedia experience,  but when you’re talking about audio, then Samsung supports high-res codex like LDAC and Samsung’s very own SSE and SSE UHQ for Bluetooth transmission.  

Performance and Hardware

Now, I’m going to be talking about the performance. We found the iPhone 16’s more powerful than the Exynos 2400 inside the Galaxy S24. Starting with Gigbench and Gigbench AI, the iPhone scored higher than Samsung.  Also, when we ran the 3D Mark wildlife extreme stress test on both phones,  the iPhone had a higher loop score and better GPU stability.  Of course, the difference in FPS was not much, which means that Samsung’s GPU is actually very, very powerful.  

Apple has added an aluminum sheet for better heat dissipation on the iPhone  16; therefore, this definitely runs cooler than the Galaxy S24. We also found the iPhone 16 to be better for gaming. You can play console-quality games like Assassin’s Creed Mirage and Resident Devil. Now, we run a real-life Genchi Impact test where we play the game for 30 minutes at the highest graphics and 60 frames per second, and the iPhone 16’s performance was incredible.

We got an average of nearly 59 FPs on the iPhone 16, whereas the S24 managed about 47, 48. It’s not like the Xenoz 2400’s GPU is not capable.  Even the iPhone does.  And when we compared the Solar Bay test, Samsung actually scored higher than the iPhone.  But overall, when you look at it, I would pick the iPhone 16 over the Galaxy S24 for gaming performance.  But when you look at daily usage, the Galaxy S24 is better.  The main reason for that is just one thing: the Samsung Galaxy S24.

It supports a 120-hertz refresh rate on the display, so it’s smooth and fast—it’s just better.  Now, both these phones also have capable modems.  Therefore, you get support for Amptine 5G bands. Etal and geo worked absolutely fine.  Mobile data works very well.  The calls sound really rich and crisp. 

Both these phones (iPhone 16 and Galaxy S24) also support Bluetooth 5.3 and NFC. However, the iPhone has an advantage with support for WiFi 7, the latest standard compared to WiFi 6C on the Galaxy S24.

Battery Life and Charging

Now, the A18, of course, is a very powerful chip, but it is also a very power-efficient chip, thanks to the use of a three-nanometer fabrication process.  We got a higher screen time of about 7 hours and 30 minutes on the iPhone 16 compared to five hours and 30 minutes on the Samsung Galaxy S24.  The point to be noted here is that we were running the S24 at 120 hertz, and if you drop it down to 60 hertz, you will get better battery life, but it won’t beat the iPhone 16 Flagship Phone.

Think of it from this perspective. If the iPhone 16 gives you 24 hours of battery life on a single charge,  then the Samsung Galaxy S24 will give you about 18 to 20 hours. That said, the Galaxy S24 offers faster wired charging of 25 watts instead of 20 watts on the iPhone 16.  The iPhone 16 takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes for a full charge, whereas the S24 takes about one hour and 10 minutes. On the other hand, the iPhone 16 now supports  25-watt MagSafe wireless charging speeds. But, of course, the MagSafe charger is about 5,500 bucks, so it’s pretty expensive.

Camera Performance

One real advantage of the S24 is that it has a proper 3X telephoto camera inside its compact body, unlike the iPhone, which doesn’t.  Even the pixel doesn’t have it. But let’s take a look at the difference in picture quality between the two so you can make a judgment for yourself. The iPhone’s 24-megapixel outputs generally mean you get more details and sharper textures than the Galaxy S24. 

 

But what I was shocked at was the 2X shots.  The iPhone’s new fusion technology is legit and makes the 2X images look optical quality.  However, when you zoom in further at 3X, Samsung has crisper, more detailed shots because of the optical lens.

Now, colors are more vibrant and punchy on the Galaxy S24. iPhone’s default look is a little warm, but you may choose one of the photographic styles to achieve a more neutral result.  Now, you know what? Photographic styles on the iPhone are not just filters;  they’re actually nondestructive edits, and you can do that while and after taking pictures.

Now, moving on to the HDR samples. Both have pretty solid tuning in terms of details picked out from the highlights and shadows, but the iPhone’s processing is definitely more natural-looking. Samsung has a very over-HDR look, as opposed to the natural look of the iPhone.

With the ultra-wide camera, the iPhone 16 captures more details and finer textures compared to the Galaxy S24. This was true for ultra-wide shots taken in good lighting conditions and low light. But the major advantage of the iPhone is that the ultra-wide can now take awesome macro shots, with added autofocus capabilities.

Against a strong backlight, Samsung’s HDR does offer better control over the highlights, but it is seriously no match for iPhone’s details at 100% crop. The Samsung sample has a lot of purple fringing, which is not on the iPhone. This is generally a problem with multi-stack processing, which Samsung needs to fix in the algorithm.

 However, Samsung does a good job in portrait shots. Except for the skin tone issues, I like both the 2X and the 3X portraits captured by the Galaxy S24. Both do take very good portraits and yes, you can take 3X portraits this time around with the base iPhones. Now, Samsung’s video recording at 4K60 FPS with the primary camera is incredible. I was very surprised because it matches HDR, detail retention, and stabilization. 

But Samsung still does a fantastic job here. I love it. But all that breaks apart when you shoot videos in low light because the iPhone is superior here. Also, the iPhone has better ultra-wide-angle video recording quality. When you shoot selfie videos at 4K60FPS using both phones, I prefer Samsung’s video recording because it does better HDR. You can also shoot cinematic videos on the iPhone, which is called Portrait Video on Samsung and Cinematic Video on the iPhone, and Cinematic video on the iPhone is definitely better.

Software and Features

Now, as for the software experience, I can’t believe I’m seeing this, but Samsung’s OneUI 6 is actually better than iOS 18, in my opinion. The main reason for that is that Galaxy AI is currently available on Samsung phones, whereas Apple intelligence is not on the iPhone 16 series. 

All right, now let me tell you what I like about OneUI.  The first thing I love about OneUI, and why I’m stuck in the Samsung ecosystem, is the Samsung wallet. It’s incredible.  Then you’ve got a secure folder, Samsung decks, and the ever-incredible Good Lock.
